Chinese Recipe : Sesame Deep Fried Beef


  • 250 g beef fillet
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • Few drops of liquid meat tenderizer
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp cornflour, blended
  • Oil for deep frying
  • 2 tbsp lightly toasted sesame seeds


  • 2 tsp oil
  • 1 ½ tsp finely chopped garlic
  • 1 ½ tsp finely chopped ginger
  • 1 tbsp Chinese rice wine
  • 1 tsp black soy sauce
  • 1 tsp black rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp white pepper powder
  • ½ cup chicken stock
  • 2 tsp cornflour, mixed with water


  1. Cut the beef into slices 1 cm thick, then place on a chopping board and flatten with the side of a cleaver until 0.5 cm thick.
  2. Put in a bowl and sprinkle with baking soda, meat tenderizer and water.
  3. Massage with the hand for 30 seconds, then add blended cornflour and massage for another 30 seconds. Drain meat and set aside.
  4. Heat oil and deep fry the beef slices for 2-3 minutes until crisp and golden. Drain and set aside.
  5. Make the sauce by heating the oil and stir frying garlic and ginger for a few seconds.
  6. Add all the sauce ingredients, except cornflour, and heat through.
  7. Thicken with cornflour, add the beef and mix well to coat the beef with sauce.
  8. Serve immediately sprinkled with sesame seeds.
